Breathing underwater and discovering the treasures that underwater depth hides can be two insurmountable reasons to spend a magnificent vacation, although knowing the benefits of this sport - which can be practiced even in a swimming pool - adds even more reasons to put it into practice .
In an interview with Infobae, Damián Giuliano - an instructor with more than 15 years of experience and training in diving medicine - revealed the physical and mental benefits of diving for health.
1 It is ideal to combat stress
If we take concentration during breathing as our main source of meditation, diving is an excellent activity to relax the senses and overcome anxieties. Under the water, the person comes into direct contact with the environment and isolates himself from distractions, to the point of hearing only the sound of his own breathing. Controlling it, becoming aware of it, listening to it through the respirator and seeing it embodied in the bubbles that emerge to the surface, are the main benefits to reduce stress. In many cases, those who learn to dive arrive on the recommendation of a health professional, and although at first they may not dare to dive, they can start with basic breathing exercises until they are encouraged to dive. All these exercises that make up scuba diving lead to relief of hyperactivity and anxiety disorders.
2 Beneficial for self-esteem
On the way to personal improvement, diving presents the challenge of crossing a barrier and overcoming a before and after in the life of each person. From the first immersion in open waters, changes in self-esteem occur and confidence increases. That is why diving is considered a sport with emotional benefits, to which new experiences and breaking with the daily routine are added.
3 Explore the environment and its unmodified wealth by man
Seeing the other half of the world is an unusual advantage, since it is about nature in its pure state and constant movement. In addition to witnessing incredible variety of flora and fauna, there is no point like the other: diving makes it possible to dive a thousand times in one place and always find something different. This attribute makes it an excellent option to relax the mind and optimize the focus and concentration that we insist on each task.
4 It is easier and safer to perform than you think
On the contrary to what is often assumed, diving is a simple and safe sport. It is not necessary to know how to swim, since it is enough not to be afraid of water. With the necessary precautionary measures and adequate training, the activity becomes very safe. In the initial dives there is always an instructor who controls the practice, to relax and enjoy to the fullest. To do this, a developed swimming style is not necessary, it is only necessary to float and move.
5 Improve social life and human relationships
Diving is recommended to strengthen human bonds: one of the safety standards of this activity is that it is always done in pairs. Therefore, it is necessary to trust the partner we choose, since it is who will help us with our team and who will collaborate in case of an unexpected situation. In addition, the dives are carried out in groups both in the practices and in the trips and in meetings organized with the common purpose of diving and exploring the aquatic depths. It is advisable to carry out this activity to reinforce interpersonal relationships, generate a greater degree of companionship and learn to share.
6 Emotional and intimate benefits
Specialists recommend diving as a sport to practice as a couple. Thus, both people spend more time together and establish new bonds of trust that emerge from the preparations for each dive, attention focused on self-care and partner. It is an ideal therapy to overcome communication barriers since gesture-based language is used and, beyond eye contact, it is very important to maintain a fluid "dialogue" under water
7 Exceed limits
You don't need to be strong or a great athlete to practice diving. People with varying degrees of disability can also access the underwater world through adapted diving.
8 Physical exercise
Being a water sport, diving is recommended to strengthen the muscles since the water offers a natural resistance, so that the human body enters movement and is toned in an integral way.
9 Coordination and psychomotor skills
Diving is an experience that develops the psychomotor ability and spatial orientation of each human being. This is because both hemispheres of the brain work while being constantly floating, it requires maintaining body balance.
10 It is suitable for all ages
Unlike other disciplines recommended by therapists and health specialists, diving can be done from 12 years onwards and without age limits. The important thing is to feel like, relax and be encouraged to enjoy its benefits. In addition, it is cheaper than it is estimated, since once the course is completed, the certification that does not expire is obtained and it is not necessary to buy any equipment to practice it, since they are rented according to the requirements of each place.
